Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs should be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

People who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
